Many couples when celebrating an anniversary exchange cards and go out for dinner. When a company celebrates an important milestone, generally they choose to throw a gala celebration and wine and dine their clients and colleagues.
Late last year the Sigma team discussed our 40th anniversary approaching and how we would choose to celebrate it. Instead of throwing a lavish party, we had a company picnic with our clients and their families at The Detroit Zoo and we unanimously agreed to volunteer at the Gleaners Community Food Bank. On a rainy Saturday morning in October, the Sigma staff met at Gleaners in Detroit, some with their children, many with their spouses, to package food for hungry people. We packed enough boxes to feed 400 families for an entire week. It was an amazing and fulfilling experience and we all agreed that it should be an annual event!
Last year, Gleaners distributed 46 million pounds of emergency food to more than 550 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties. They alleviate hunger by providing the equivalent of more than 100,000 meals per day to people who otherwise cannot afford the food they need. Sigma is proud to support Gleaners and to have participated as a team in helping to feed those in need.
